Heroes and Whistleblowers

Four men appear in black t-shirts,
black masks covering their faces.
Standing on the Supreme Court steps
demanding “gratitude” for their actions
in raping a man with a stick,
incredulous that “instead of appreciation, we received accusations”.

Ben-Gvir calls these men,
accused gang rapists,
“heroes”,
storming the court to demand their release.
What more heroic action could there be
that the gang rape of a shackled man?
If you were to ask,
as did Ahmad Tibi,
“To insert a stick in a person’s rectum, is that legitimate?”
you would be answered by Hanoch Milwidsky,
“Yes! If he is a Nukhba, everything is legitimate to do to him!”
Just as when Vance is asked
about the extrajudicial killing of Venezuelan’s
he replies “I don’t give a shit”

This is not the “genocidal atrocity propaganda”
of which Norman Finklestein accuses Israel.
It is not even, in Chomsky’s ironic adoption of the NYT motto,
“News that’s fit to print”
for the western media does not report
criticism of its allies and accomplices.

Because the crime is not the rape.
It is the revelation of the rape.
Because the rape is not the crime
but rather the release of the video showing the rape.
To expose the actions of these “heroes”
is “blood libel” says Israel Katz.
To expose the actions of these “heroes”
is “perhaps the most severe public relations attack that the State of Israel has experienced since its establishment”
says Bibi.

Yet who is in Gaol?
Not these brave “heroes”
those filmed perpetrating anal rape.
Arrested and imprisoned
is former military advocate Major General Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi,
the whistle blower who “leaked” the video,
who opined “It is our duty to investigate whenever there is reasonable suspicion of acts of violence against a detainee”.
The victim is released to Gaza
his whereabouts, no doubt, known
his silence readily achieved,
in the usual way,
when necessary,
while 10,000 detainees remain in Israeli prisons
and the bodies of former detainees
are sometimes returned
showing signs of abuse and torture.

The crimes of
Sde Teiman
Abu Ghraib
Guantanamo Bay
Don Dale
will remain
will be repeated
will be unreported
until a person of conscious
blows a whistle.

Yifat faces the fate of
those who reveal the truth
of corrupt regimes:
Edward Snowden
Chelsea Manning
David McBride
Bernard Collaery
so many more
all confirming Selwyn Duke’s observation:
The further a society drifts from the truth, the more it will hate those who speak it
